I'm more of a movie person but that does not mean I do not watch some series that one could call a "soap opera" :) Along the years there were a few that I loved watching and come back to from time to time. The ones that I will mention here are not necessarily my favorite or the best that I've seen. Some are bringing good memories from childhood, some remind me of certain places I've been to or enjoy coming back to and some...are actually the series I'm watching right now :) I will divide them into 3 themes.....one is "Devoted to New York City", another to " What's up doc? " :) and the third one will be "Too much drama but there's something about it".
New York is very often the background for movies and series. Some say it is the best city in the world..... Well I wouldn't go that far but there is something about it. When I was in high school, one day I came across "Felicity" on tv.... And very accidentally became addicted :)
This series showed me the world I was maybe secretly dreaming about, story of a young girl moving to Big Apple to attend NY college, but actually doing it for a boy she fell for in high school...yeahhh tell me about it :) Sounds very naive but in fact, many of young girls in high school have the hots for THIS guy that seems to be perfect, maybe even not knowing him they perceive their imaginary world of pure fantasy where everything is possible. Felicity is a straight A student and kind of a geek in fact but she is secretly wanting love and adventure. Title role played by Keri Russell - perfect choice in my opinion.
Along 4 seasons we can enjoy the world of young adults growing up in New York City that actually gives here this certain "something". I don't live in such big city as NY so for me, observing culture, street life and areas of New York was amazing. I was thinking.....yeahhh I could be that girl, moving out of my country to NY! Felicity finds good friends there, job, knowledge and love. And it's almost always about the same two guys, the one she came for, Ben - played by Scott Speedman - and the other one that tries to win her love, Noel - played by Scott Foley.
I must admit that this series won my heart on that time! And I got really interested in this city but the time I first went to NY was in 2004 so after the series ended. Still, while wandering around the streets I could remember the red brick buildings and felt like I've been there before :)
Another series that was set in New York is a very famous among women "Sex and the City". It was a big hit starting from 1998 till.... now (at least in my head) :)
Those 4 amazing women presented us true friendship and some seriously disturbing fashion trends in the 90's :) I have watched all 6 seasons and their transformation many times. I love the dialogues there, the jokes and the differences between Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha. And no matter what you say, I don't care about the fact that Carrie could not in reality afford so many pairs of shoes...the very expensive ones like Manolo Blahnik's...I simply adored this series! And the way New York is presented there! Actually, it's like New York City is the fifth main character.
Soon I'll visit NY again and surely you'll be able to find me somewhere on Manhattan sipping a Cosmopolitan, cocktail that became amazingly famous thanks to Sex and the City. But beyond the fashion, trends, restaurants and simply the style of life that is presented in the series...it is a story about great friends that support each other no matter what. Women that stand to each other whenever life brings them down, share their secrets and make the viewer believe in love and hope for better.
It's not that I became a fan of this series when it appeared on tv. Actually, it was few years later when the series was almost coming to an end. I guess I needed to grow up a little to understand it the right way.... This is definitely addressed to an adult audience, especially the scenes with Samantha who has never hidden her promiscuous way of life :)
And what I have to state here loudly....thank God for HBO and the people who are decisive there! They have the balls to make such bold and courageous series like Sex and the City!
The third one I would like to mention here is "White Collar".
Just to explain something, I'm a big fan of Harlan Coben books so it's nothing weird I do like this series too :)
Handsome Matt Bomer playing an ex-con that joins FBI agent Peter Burke and together they catch art theft criminals and not only.
There is mystery, puzzles to be solved, sexy attitude and sarcastic jokes that I love. And of course... New York in the background :)
As a curious additional news I can tell that you can find here one of the actors that also played in Sex and the City, a male friend of Carrie ;)
Let's move to the next division of mine when it comes to series, "What's up doc" :))) well....not much to explain, all the series about doctors hellloooo And there's been a few ;)
Does anyone remember "Doogie Howser" ??? If you don't, no harm as it was on tv in 1989 :) Story about a teenage licensed physician, a genius boy to be more frank and problems that all young genius people deal with.
I remember I did watch it on tv although I was very young, primary school :)
And today the actor who played Doogie is still famous, Neil Patrick Harris is quite a comedian, been in few movies and also one of the stars in How I met your mother series.
However, if you ask me when the so called "fashion" for series about medicine, doctors and hospitals started I simply say "ER" :)
This one I did not follow too often, it was more of a from time to time, but that was ok, I was still in the loop of what's goin' on. Each episode, new medicine story. Really cool plot and actors. Not to mention George Clooney who kind of made his way thru ER :)
Another series that just HAS TO BE MENTIONED here is...
"House M.D.". Imagine or not but this series I have watched just last year, all seasons in few months as I think it was just brilliant! And why it was brilliant? because of title Dr House played by Hugh Laurie. And again the riddle, puzzles and amazing sarcasm set in science-medicine world ;)
Seriously, if you haven't watched it....it's worth your time :)
Last series in this topic is still on the air "Grey's Anatomy".
Even though I do really liked this series from the beginning I feel like it should come to an end. All the best stories and plots were already showed. Some of the actors I liked already left. And now, what Shonda Rhimes is trying to do seems a bit desperate from time to time or maybe... it's just a matter of being fed up with the subject? Grey's Anatomy is on since 2005...
I'm gonna name those at once... "Dynasty", "Damages" and "Revenge" or should I write "DRevenge" so that all start with D :)
Now that's an old school :) On air 1981-1989 so it actually started before I was even born and yet, I was watching it in primary school. I clearly remember saying to my mom "Ohhh please please Mom, let me watch it" :) And Dynasty is all about drama, cat fights (Krystle vs Alexis obviously) and everybody being with everybody and suddenly getting to know that their children who died were apparently alive :) Ridiculous when you think about it from this perspective and yet it was a big hit. Aaron Spelling knew what he was doing!
Glen Close is the heart and soul of this drama. The whole conspiracy behind the scenes in the law world is very tricky. And even though I don't know anything about it, I can imagine it could be as presented in "Damages". Deceiving people, big money and power that brings to murder on occasion.
Maybe I should have mentioned this one in the first topic, as New York is also the background here :)
And the last one, series that I am watching now "Revenge".
The picture on the left is also my favorite character in Revenge, demonic Victoria Grayson played by Madeleine Stowe. And I think I can as well say that she keeps the whole thing going! At least in season 1 :)
Many new young upcoming actors in this one! We'll see if they make it after Revenge ends ;)
